Record-Breaking Start to 2025 for Used EV Sales

January 20, 2025

The demand for used electric vehicles (EVs) continues to surge, with BCA reporting record-breaking sales during the first full trading week of 2025. Nearly 1,000 EVs were sold in just one week, including cars and specialist light commercial vehicles (LCVs). This impressive milestone builds on the positive sales trends observed throughout 2024 and signals a strong start to the new year for the used vehicle market.

With these figures, BCA is on track to sell over 40,000 used EVs in 2025, reflecting the growing popularity of electric vehicles across the UK. In 2023 alone, over 3,000 unique buyers purchased EVs through BCA - a 35% increase compared to the previous year.

Why Are Used EV Sales Rising?

The rise in used EV sales is driven by increasing buyer confidence and falling prices, with many used electric models now as affordable - or even cheaper - than their petrol and diesel counterparts. Anecdotal feedback from buyers suggests that retail interest in EVs is at an all-time high, with consumers increasingly opting for electric as their next vehicle choice.

The supply of used EVs is also growing rapidly, with the number of electric vehicles entering the remarketing sector doubling annually. As the UK’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate targets for new cars increase from 22% to 28% in 2025, this trend is expected to continue, bringing more EVs into the used market.

Driving Buyer Confidence with Innovation

To support this growing demand, BCA has been investing heavily in infrastructure and services tailored to the EV market. In October 2023, BCA launched an innovative EV battery health grading service - said to be the first of its kind in the UK remarketing sector.

This grading system provides an at-a-glance assessment of a vehicle’s battery condition, giving buyers greater transparency and dispelling concerns about higher-mileage electric vehicles. With detailed battery health reports, buyers can make informed decisions with confidence.

Looking Ahead

Stuart Pearson, BCA’s Chief Operating Officer, remarked: “Breaking records in the first trading week of the year sets the tone for what’s to come. It’s clear that customer perception of used EVs is changing for the better. As returns increase significantly this year, we’re continuing to invest in infrastructure and services to create the best possible wholesale market for used EVs.”

As the EV market continues to grow, BCA’s commitment to innovation and customer confidence ensures a bright future for the used EV sector, paving the way for more drivers to make the switch to electric.
