New Regulations Set to Transform EV Charging

December 13, 2024

Reliable and seamless charging is at the heart of the electric vehicle (EV) transition, so the latest regulations introduced as part of the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023, which came into effect on 24 November are now more important than ever. These new standards aim to enhance the public charging experience, ensuring that drivers feel confident making the switch to electric.

99% Reliability: A Game-Changer for Public Charging

With the new regulations, rapid charge point operators are now required to deliver 99% reliability across their networks. This significant commitment means fewer charging frustrations for drivers and a more seamless experience across the UK’s growing network of public charge points. As of October 2024, there were approximately 70,000 public charge points nationwide, with this number growing every day to meet surging demand.

In addition to reliability, all rapid and ultra-rapid charge points - and new charge points of 8kW or more - must now offer contactless payment. This move simplifies the charging process, eliminating barriers to entry and providing a user-friendly experience for every driver.

Support When You Need It, 24/7

Recognising that even the best systems may occasionally face challenges, operators are now required to provide free, round-the-clock helplines to resolve issues swiftly. Whether it’s a payment glitch or a technical hiccup, drivers can trust that help is only a call away, ensuring peace of mind every time they plug in.

Better Data, Smarter Charging

Transparency is key. The new regulations also mandate that drivers receive improved data on charge point locations, opening hours, and the type of energy used - such as renewable electricity. This ensures that EV owners can make informed decisions about where and when to charge, maximising convenience while supporting sustainability.

A Growing Market, A Bright Future

With EV sales hitting record highs, making up over 25% of car registrations in November, the demand for reliable charging infrastructure has never been greater. These regulations, championed by trade group RECHARGE UK and developed in collaboration with the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), are designed to keep pace with this growing market.
