ICE-ing: Why Parking in an EV Bay Causes More Disruption Than You Think

February 28, 2025

We've all been there - struggling to find a parking space, running late, and grabbing the first spot available. But if that space happens to be an EV charging bay, it’s not just an inconvenience for an electric vehicle (EV) driver - it’s a real roadblock.

What is ICE-ing?

ICE-ing happens when a petrol or diesel (ICE) vehicle parks in an EV charging space, making it impossible for an EV driver to charge. It’s not dissimilar to parking in a disabled or parent-and-child bay without needing it, which must be hugely frustrating, but in this case, it prevents someone from refuelling their car entirely.

Most ICE drivers don’t mean to cause problems - they may not realise the impact, or they assume there are plenty of other chargers available. But for an EV driver, a blocked charger can mean the difference between getting home and being stranded.

Why It Matters

EVs don’t have petrol stations – Public chargers are often the only option for some drivers, especially in cities.
It’s not just parking - it’s refuelling – Many EV chargers serve just one car at a time, so a blocked bay means no charging at all.
Businesses rely on charging – Fleets, hotels, and workplaces are installing chargers to support drivers. If they’re blocked, they can’t operate efficiently.

A Little Thoughtfulness Goes a Long Way

If you drive an ICE vehicle, simply avoiding EV bays can make a big difference. And if you see an ICE vehicle in a charging bay, a friendly reminder can help raise awareness.

EV adoption is growing fast, and we’re all adjusting. A little consideration now helps ensure that everyone can get where they need to go.

At EVC Solutions, we help businesses and fleet operators install and manage EV charging the right way. Let’s work together to make charging fair and accessible for all.

If you want to know more about anything to do with EV charge point installation for your fleet, hotel, place of work, commercial building, holiday let or home, please contact EVC Solutions – The Electric Vehicle Charging Specialists, and see what's possible.
