Today (September 9th) is World EV Day™️.
We set up EVC Solutions Ltd in early 2019 and have enjoyed the progress that the electric vehicle (EV) revolution has experienced since then.
By the end of 2019, there were 37,850 new EVs registered for the total year with a 1.6% market share. Compare that to this year where 193,221 new EVs have been registered so far with a 20.1% market share. That’s more than a massive increase. New diesel registrations are less than 10% of what they were in the same period (from 583,488 to 46,790). (Source: Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT))
In 2019 there were under 97,565 EVs on UK roads. Now there are 856,921 fully electric cars on UK roads (source: Zapmap). That's nearly 9 times more EVs in 4 years.
These figures are obviously helped by the availability of new EVs with a better mileage range, government policies and incentives to reach Net Zero, and a change in public behaviour.
Yesterday the UN released a ‘global stocktake’ report on the progress made since the Paris Agreement back in 2015. The report calls for "radical decarbonisation" with a fast phase-out of fossil fuels without carbon capture.
Renewable energy also needs significant expansion while deforestation needs to be halted and reversed by 2030.
The document acknowledges that much progress has been made but the global rise in temperatures predicted for this century is still well above what was promised in Paris.
With no exhaust emissions, fewer parts, and more ability to use renewable energy, switching from traditional Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) to more sustainable technology like EVs is seen as part of the positive transformation.
Back in 2019 there were just under 17,000 public charge points available. There are now over 48,000 available. While this is not enough and progress still needs to be made, more houses have their own charge points which will suffice for most journeys.
There is still much to be done and more progress to be made but we are proud to be part of an industry that is having a positive impact on the world!
We celebrate World EV Day and look forward to many more!
