New data from Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that in July:
1. One battery electric vehicle (BEV) was registered every 60 seconds 👏 .
2. New market outlook expects one new BEV to be registered every 50 seconds by year-end, rising to one every 40 in 2024, as the industry calls for an EV charge point mandate to accelerate uptake.
The data shows that 23,010 new BEVs were registered in July compared to 12,243 in the same period last year. That's a whopping 87.9% increase and a 16% market share.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT says 'The industry remains committed to meeting the UK’s zero emission deadlines and continues to make the investments to get us there. Choice and innovation in the market are growing, so it’s encouraging to see more people switching on to the benefits of driving electric. With inflation, rising costs of living and a zero-emission vehicle mandate that will dictate the market coming next year, however, consumers must be given every possible incentive to buy. Government must pull every lever, therefore, to make buying, running and, especially, charging an EV affordable and practical for every driver in every part of the country.'
Charge point numbers continue to rise ⬆ as analysts Zapmap added another 1999 charging devices to their database last month. That makes a total of 72,778 at connectors at 26,805 locations. 17,945 of these are rapid or ultra-rapid.
The EV industry continues to myth-bust and educate the facts about the joy of driving and charging electric vehicles, and this data shows that it's working!
