Japanese car firm make game-changing claim for EV battery development

4th July 2023
Japanese car manufacturer Toyota has unveiled ambitious plans to halve the size, cost and weight of batteries for its electric vehicles (EVs) following a breakthrough in its solid-state battery technology.

The company announced yesterday a simplification in the production of the material used to make EV batteries, hailing the discovery as a significant leap forward that could dramatically cut charging times and increase driving range.

Keiji Kaita, president of Toyota’s research and development centre for carbon neutrality said “For both our liquid and solid-state batteries, we are aiming to drastically change the situation where current batteries are too big, heavy and expensive. In terms of potential, we will aim to halve all of these factors.”

The company expects to be able to manufacture solid-state batteries for use in EVs as soon as 2027, according to the Financial Times, which first reported on Toyota’s claimed breakthrough.

The new solid-state battery technology could give a range of 745 miles that charges in 10 minutes. However, Toyota was also reprimanded recently by the Advertising Standards Authority for making misleading claims about charging times and rapid-charging points in UK and Ireland.

The sustainability of the solid-state process and the product has yet to be revealed, but the non-reliance on lithium may prove a game-changer for the EV industry.

EV production has been under fire recently from various quarters but as we have seen today with the chair of the Treasury Select Committee claiming that petrol stations and retailers have "pocketed" the benefit of the 5p fuel duty price cut last March, drivers need some assurances that the future has some stability and sustainability they can trust.
